What is freecording?
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0sFNE3PPd4]
Freecording is:
- to rally against the conceived notion of camcording
- a way for us to capture the visual world around us in our own way, with our own style and our own view
- living and shooting at the same time
- a new campaign concept from Canon
And a concept it is. In fact, I think its weakness is that it’s too conceptual. It’s all funky camera work and trendy beats. Is “freecording” a term they’ve coined themselves? If so*, then please present your official information in a way which explains what freecording is instead of making me feel like I am the last person on the planet to hear about this, must be uber-uncool and therefore need to buy some Canon equipment immediately to correct this affliction.
Canon is already a well loved brand, points out FlipCatch, particularly among the digital crowd. Why have they tried so hard to say they’re ‘hip and online’?
What do I think? Canon: just give some cool creative types (or as you think of them “the YouTube generation” some kit and let them create your campaign for you. Someone like Documentally would’ve been perfect to help you get your camcorders out there in a fresh and relevant way.
The best thing about this video is the sexy French accents as part of the voiceover – and everything sounds better with a French accent; including c’est merde.
* assumption based on the fact there’s nothing on Wikipedia about it
