In my opinion, engagement is the name of the game when it comes to companies whose product/s warrant a social dynamic. So i'd say that in the case of Skittles, the decision to move their presence into an open playing field has worked in their favor. I often look at what companies are trying to achieve with their online presence, and sometime come to the conclusion that they host a website for the sake of securing a domain.
