On geek chic and bloggers being freaks

Geek chic

Geek chic

Was thinking about this stereotype that bloggers are freaks. [Thanks for the birthday shout out Annie]

I still meet the odd marketer who hopes bloggers/online communities will make their campaign go viral for them and give them lots of free publicity while still sneering that it’s because “they’re freaks” and “have nothing better to do” and still question why these people would want to broadcast stuff about themselves.

I first discussed this on my previous post about being Too Shy To Share and I’ve since seen on my travels there’s been some research on virtual shyness vs. IRL shyness. Leila got it straight off in the comments of that post… We just broadcast stuff about ourselves in different ways we feel comfortable.

MediaCamp London 2008

I’m at MediaCamp today and this will be easiest blog post I’ll ever write. If you want to know what went down I won’t have to tell you, the community will do that for me (which seems fair since I arrived here at 9am to find out it didn’t start till 10). The Social Media Mafia are blogging (via SpinVox) posting to Flickr and updating the Wiki throughout today.

In the first 5 mins I’ve already heard about something new, Swarm, which no doubt I’ll be hearing more about as lots of ‘the family’ seem to be using it.

Thanks to our venue SAE (even if we couldn’t even find our way up the stairs without a guided tour).

[Can you tell I'm a little bit sleepy today?]

Facebook app developer wanted

I’ve been so busy lately I haven’t had a chance to blog about Media Trust which is an organisation to connect media peeps with charities.

I had a fun night recently at one of their Media Matching events (like speed dating) and am now talking with some organisations, both established and starting up, about digital comms.

There’ll be more to say here as projects get up and running but in the meantime I’m looking for a lovely developer type to build a Facebook app to help launch a new charity (v. cool premise). Email me if you or someone you know would like to hear more darika[at]grapevine-consulting.com

I promise to shout your name from the rooftops if you want a bit of publicity for it.

And, if you’re a PR get yourself down there. You don’t have to be feeling all worthy and stuff. A lot of people do it to boost their CV, get more experience etc. Lack of time shouldn’t worry you either. It could be as little as a couple of hours one-off consultancy to a catch-up over coffee every couple of months.

New PC Pro blog

Just seen that PC Pro has launched a blog. Good example of a “traditional” media outlet getting it right. The posts are short, to the point, and entertaining. I can’t say I’ve ever been a huge reader of the mag (I’m not really their target audience) but once I started scanning through the blog there were loads of posts which grabbed my attention.

Internet World

Just a quick reminder that Internet World is taking place at Earls Court this week 29 Apr – 1 May.

I was probably a bit too excited when just now they sent my very first mobile ad to plug the event. It arrives as an MMS, you click play and it pops up on the screen for about 10secs or so with a bit of blurb. I guess the novelty will wear off.

Sony BMG launches on demand music streaming with We7

We7 logoExciting developments at We7 [a ShinyRed client whose account I formerly worked on]. Today sees the new Sony BMG music streaming service going live.

While it isn’t yet ready to go head-to-head with services like Last.fm it’s positive to see a major label  take its first steps into ”free” music provision. Although it looks like the delivery, via live streaming only, shows Sony BMG is not on board with We7′s DRM position.

This is diplomatically expressed as:

Under the Influence: Part 5, POKE

Under the InfluenceI attended Iris’s 2nd annual Under the Influence event last week. I spent my afternoon mainly camped out at the sessions held in  ”The Dive Inn” aka The George Inn near Borough Market listening to speakers from Iris Experiential, Contagious Magazine, Frukt and Poke.

For my round-up of their “best bits” I’ve written a few posts on the speakers.
